26 dead in massive fire at building in West Delhi; PM Modi, Amit Shah offer condolences

New Delhi : At least 26 people died after a major fire broke out in a building near Mundka metro station in west Delhi on Friday (May 13). Around 24 fire tenders were pressed into service.   The fire department officials received information about the blaze at 4.40 pm, PTI reported. According to the fire department officials, the blaze broke out in a building near pillar number 544, Mundka metro station. DCP Sameer Sharma, Outer District informed that 50 were rescued while 26 died in the fire.  “Fire fighting operation has been concluded. Rescue operation continues, it will take time given the vastness of the area,” said Sunil Choudhary, Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Delhi Fire Service.  The Delhi police said that at least 10 were injured in the fire. Earlier, the Delhi police had confirmed that one woman was charred to death in the blaze. India Declares One-Day State Mourning After UAE President's Death

New Delhi:   India announced one day of state mourning on Saturday following the demise of UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. According to a communication issued by the Union Home Ministry to all states and union territories on Friday, as a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, the Government of India has decided that there will be one day's state mourning on May 14 across the country. On the day of mourning, the national flag will be flown at half-mast on all buildings where it is flown regularly and there will be no official entertainment, the communication said. Sheikh Khalifa, ailing for a long time, died on Friday. He was 73. He was the eldest son of the UAE's founder President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. He served as the President of the UAE and ruler of Abu Dhabi from November 3, 2004. He was elected to succeed his father who served as the UAE's first president from 1971 until he passed away on November 2, 2004.

Hyderabad:   Ahead of Home Minister Amit Shah's visit to Telangana today, state Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao's son KT Rama Rao or KTR has written an open letter to the senior BJP leader on the "injustice" being done to the southern state by his party. In the letter, KTR, who is Working President of Telangana Rashtra Samithi, accused the BJP of spreading hatred amongst the people in Telangana. He added that BJP did not fulfil a single promise made to Telangana but fulfilled every requirement of BJP-ruled states like Gujarat on a war footing. India bans wheat exports as heat wave hurts crop, domestic prices soar

MUMBAI, May 14 (Reuters) - India banned wheat exports on Saturday, just days after saying it was targeting record shipments this year, as a scorching heat wave curtailed output and domestic prices soared to an all-time high. The government said it would still allow exports backed by already issued letters of credit and to countries that request supplies "to meet their food security needs". Global buyers were banking on supplies from the world's second-biggest wheat producer after exports from the Black Sea region plunged following Russia's Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine. Before the ban, India had aimed to ship a record 10 million tonnes this year. Although it is not one of the world's top wheat exporters, India's ban could drive global prices to new peaks given already tight supply, hitting poor consumers in Asia and Africa particularly hard.
